It is derived from the word government meaning it it restricted for American governmental
bodies. It has become standard protocol for any governmental departments, agencies,
programs, cities, towns, US territories etc. If any other country wants to use this domain
extension, they must use second level domain. Eg- UK is registered as .gov.uk. To buy this
domain, you need to be a part of authorised government entity and submit an authorisation
letter to CISA.
